Selects 2012 National Service Project

New York, N.Y. (1/29/12) – Every year the sisters of Chi Upsilon Sigma National Latin Sorority Inc., select a specific community service project. This year the Grand Chapter Board of Chi Upsilon Sigma is excited to announce that the 2012 National Service Project will be the Dove’s Real Beauty Campaign.

We believe that in order for young girls to become strong, confident women we must first teach them that Real Beauty is not just about appearance, that we all have talents that are unique to us. Accepting our natural body is important because no one is the same-and that’s what makes us beautiful.

Our undergraduate and graduate chapters will be concentrating on developing the self-esteem of young girls nationwide in 2012 through The Dove’s Real Beauty guided workshop for girls.

The Dove Real Beauty Workshops for Girls are fun, educational and interactive sessions for young girls ages 8-12. The workshop concentrates in starting a dialogue on beauty and self-image with a member of the next generation. By attending these workshops, young girls will learn how society creates “ideal” images of beauty and how to engage young girls in a healthy dialogue about self-esteem. 

It is vital that the Sisters of our organization become advocates for the young girls in our community. Young women today are growing up in a society that bombards them with messages about how they should look, feel and how to value themselves. These messages often times can be damaging to a young girls self esteem.

As we browse through magazines and watch movies, it is apparent that these messages are not only confusing but also contradictory to what is healthy. In this day and age when we ask girls whom they think is beautiful, they often refer to celebrities, but it’s important for us to teach what Real Beauty is and not what other people tell us it is. Real beauty is how we see and feel about our body image and ourselves. 

It is because of these messages and its effects on the self-esteem of our youth that the sisters of CUS are helping to spread a healthier message about self-image, self-esteem and self worth.

Chi Upsilon Sigma has been in existence since April 29, 1980, incepted on the New Brunswick Campus of Rutgers – the State University of New Jersey. Our founders are 7 Latinas who had the desire to create an organization to promote leadership among the Latino community and our membership has since grown to incorporate women of all ethnicities. Chi Upsilon Sigma has devoted itself to increasing awareness amongst ourselves, and our communities about important political, social, cultural, and educational issues and servicing the communities around us.

NALFO (National Association of Latino Fraternal Organizations) is an umbrella council for Latino Greek Letter Organizations. The purpose of NALFO is to promote and foster positive interfraternal relations, communication, and development of all Latino Fraternal organizations through mutual respect, leadership, honesty, professionalism and education.
